Park View

I have had the opportunity to venture into this neighborhood for work many times. Although areas of Georgia Avenue have rebounded, I think this area is still struggling somewhat, although it is moving in the right direction. Park View has approximately 6,418 residents living in a variety of single family and attached homes. In 2010 the average price of a home for sale here was $309,834.

Residents have a variety of schools to send their children to including Bruce Monroe Elementary School, Park View Elementary School and E.L. Haynes PCS-Georgia Avenue Campus. Recreational activities are focused on the Parkview Recreation Center that is located in the middle of the neighborhood. Many restaurants are located along Georgia Avenue and there are a few markets and other stores located within the neighborhood. The Washington Hospital Center is located nearby as is the Georgia Avenue Petworth Metro Station.

Crime could be a issue to some potential residents as crimes against people and property occur on a regular basis. As always check recent crime statistics and make an informed decision before moving into any neighborhood.

Named for it's close proximity to the green spaces surrounding the Soldier's Home, this neighborhood in the central District has not had the best outlook in the past several years. A quiet neighborhood along Georgia Avenue, the area has been the home to predominately middle-class African-Americans for decades. The commercial area has a variety of liquor stores, but until recent years few other retail establishments. Since 2009, however, the area has begun to see the kind of commercial and residential development that other areas of the District have seen. These include modernizing Park View Elementary School; the construction of a Senior Wellness Center; and the opening of a new CVS Pharmacy in September 2010. Two other mixed-use residential projects are at various stages of development. One, the Park Morton complex, will include low-income residential units with ground-floor retail space; phase I is set to open in December 2011. Another, the Heights on Georgia Avenue, promises the same mixture of low-income rental and retail space; at this time, however, ground has not been broken on this project. While this development is promising, the Park View area may not serve as a magnet for young middle-class professionals for several years. The availability of schools, business and employment opportunities, and quality housing will continue to be a problem for the foreseeable future.
