South Central

South Central DC is a typical DC neighborhood in North East. Like most of them, it is pretty safe: just the occasional theft or burglary take place here, so it is pretty quiet. Of course, quiet is true in other ways as well. There is only one road with significant amounts of retail or food service, and this can be a bit seedy. Houses however are generally in good condition, because residents take care of their homes. Because Howard University Divinity School is in the confines of the neighborhood, there are very high quality young African-American young people living there. Needless to say, there are some students living in the homes here, but not the noisy and annoying type.
A nice park in the middle of the neighborhood makes for a great place to go jogging, or for walking your dog, after work. You might say the place invites an active lifestyle in this way. Because people are proud of where they live, the sense of community is strong. If there’s something they need to get out of city government, the citizens know how to get it. Of course, a closer Metro stop might be nice for the commuters. Unless of course, they want to stay more suburban.

This neighborhood of 4,181 residents is located in the northeast section of the city along the Maryland state line. Also know as Woodridge, the border of this neighborhood is defined by Eastern Avenue N.E., South Dakota Avenue N.E, Bladensburg Road N.E. and Shepherd Street N.E.. Homes here are 78% owner occupied and the average price for a home sold in 2010 was 249,289. The homes here are typically single family detached homes with nice yards. Commercial space can be found along Bladensburg Road N.E..

Woodridge Elementary School is the only school found within the neighborhood, although nearby the Howard University School of Divinity can be found. Residents will enjoy Bernard Park and is the main dedicated green space within the neighborhood. Currently there are 6 places of worship here. Shopping is limited as are restaurants, hover some can be found along Bladensburg Road N.E.. Most will want to venture outside of the neighborhood for better shopping and dining opportunities. There are numerous Metro Bus stops here with the Brookland-Cua being the nearest Metro station.

The neighborhood appears to be relatively safe according to the most recent crime statistics, with most crime being property type of crimes including a rash of theft from vehicle reports within the last 30 days. South Central is a small, residential neighborhood in Washington, DC. It is made up primarily of older residents who have lived in the community for some time. Most residents fall in the middle income bracket and own their own homes. About one-fourth of them have children.

The homes themselves are older, many having been built during the housing boom brought on by World War II. Though the original structures had been built quickly, they were also built well and have been maintained through the years, allowing them to grown in value along with the rest of the real estate market.

Unfortunately, South Central have been plagued by an increasing amount of crime over the past few years. There have already been several thefts of cars and from cars this month, as well as a couple of burglaries.
Older residents are especially concerned about their safety, and are reluctant to go out at night. Many of the younger residents on the other hand, especially teenagers, find themselves all too often on the wrong side of the law. This is creating a perfect storm for decline and decay in what could be a very nice place to live.
