If you're thinking about moving/living here, this neighborhood is a no-brainer. When it comes to value, quiet neighborhood, walking distance to bars and restaurants it's certainly hard to beat.

There is little in the way of positive elements here in Trinidad. While its sense of art and culture is at least kept alive by its close proximity to the Atlas Theater District, the whole area seems stuck in an overwhelming state of exhaustion. Like several other neighborhoods in the area, there is not much in the way of anything. The school system is not the best in the city by any means. While there are not many offerings in the way of chain stores or large scale retailers, the basics are at least covered by CVS and more independently owned stores. There is also something of a selection of nightlife- several bars and clubs dot the neighborhood. All in all, things could of course always be worse in Trinidad, but the neighborhood is just another in a slew of areas with so much farther to go. All it needs for hope though, is to look back on what it was.

People who like quiet and safe neighborhoods aren’t likely to find it in Trinidad. This neighborhood has one of the worst reputations for crime in the city. To be sure it isn’t the absolute worst (that’s across the Anacostia), but there is nonetheless a lot of violence. In the eighties, when crack cocaine hit DC hard, Trinidad was one of the worst hit. There’s been some improvement in the neighborhood recently, but still it isn’t the world’s safest place to be. Because of housing prices being what they are in DC right now, some middle class people are starting to move in—much to the chagrin of long time residents, who will soon be priced out of their homes.
Nowadays there’s a neighborhood coalition to try and get rid of the violence, both through community policing and by bugging the city government to do something. How long that’s going to take, who knows, but right now the danger isn’t just after dark: people get shot in broad daylight. If you have kids I strongly suggest you think twice about moving here: you aren’t going to want them outside playing at all. If you’re alone however, it might be worth it. Just make sure you have a dog and a burglar alarm handy.

Trinidad is a neighborhood of 6,483 residents located adjacent to Gallaudet University in the northeast section of the city.The neighborhood falls within the boundaries of Florida Avenue N.E., West Virginia Avenue N.E., Mt. Olive Road N.E., and Bladensburg Road N.E.. In 2010 the average price of a home sold in this neighborhood was $193,441, with 30% of the homes being owner occupied. Most homes are the traditional row house style home with many offering parking in the rear yard with access being a shared alley.

The neighborhood features the Wheatley Educational Campus as the single school. Residents will find limited shopping opportunities, but will find approximately 7 restaurants in the neighborhood. Public transportation is limited to numerous Metro Bus stops with the New York Metro Station being at least a 15 minute walk depending upon where you are in the neighborhood. The Wheatley Recreation Center is located in the neighborhood for the use of the residents. A limited amount of green space can be found here as well as at Trinidad Playground. There are at least 7 spaces of worship in the neighborhood.

Crime statistics indicate that this can be a tough neighborhood for residents to live in. Crimes against people and property are common. Recently there was a homicide in the neighborhood. As always, review recent crime statistics to make an informed decision as to the crime risk before moving into any neighborhood.
