Should we add H&H bagels to the list? or any other NYC bagels because they are supposedly the best!

What do you guys think of Junior's cheesecake? Does it live up to its reputation?

Have to admit that although I lived around the corner from Katz' I could never brave the lines of tourists, especially not at those prices. Also it was annoying to have to point random tourists in that direction every time I got on the F train. Obviously I have a personal vendetta against the place....

Junior's cheesecake is excellent but way too rich for me.. I couldnt stomach Katz's pastrami though I know it has legions of fans..was thinking of adding New York Pizza to the list.. I know folk love Lombardi's pizza but for me its Totonno's and Patsy's...friends and relatives who visit from overseas also always seem to want a NY steak dinner at Peter Luger's or Smith and Wollensky wonder if that to classifies as NYC foods?..

Egg cream is pretty specific to New York, and especially associated with Brooklyn. Though a lot of people complain that you can't get them like you used to.

What about Indian food. There are two restuarants down on 1st Ave, I believe, that serve great Indian food. You can't miss them. They have a lot of lights. They always look like Christmas time when going by. And the people inside are the friendliest bunch of people. The only downside is they don't take credit cards.

Thanks for the additions, you guys. You pretty much got the spirit of the list--foods that have morphed into a unique experience, from a locale that can be considered the king of all such food offerings of its kind. I'm still looking for a place that would be considered the king of the soup dumplings places, one that is distinctly good--anybody?

@ uptowngirl I added the frozen hot chocolate on your recommendation, though I haven't had it myself.

Keep the suggestions coming, though.

Once I started to really think about this one, the ideas just kept coming. Now we're past top ten and verging on twenty.
