How far in advance do I start searching for an apartment in Oakland?

I am a young professional moving to the Bay Area in August from out of state and I am hoping to live near Adams Point. How far in advance should I start looking into apartments as I know the housing market moves pretty quickly in Oakland? Also, I cannot make a trip to Oakland before I move so what would be the best method to finding a good apartment in Adams Point?
