"Best of both Conservative and Progressive Worlds"
It's a university town set in a precious country area. Like any medium sized city, there's gritty areas, but the low income areas blend really well with the average and upper income areas because of the layout. Despite being a "college town" there's wonderful little pockets of serenity. The college is within walking distance of almost everything, and most places, including downtown Athens, still have the original brick buildings, housing centuries of history with a fresh coat of paint.
Pros
- beautiful greenery
- very affordable housing
- lots of local breweries
Cons
- during weekends, downtown smells awful
- winding streets make getting to know the city difficult
