"A discovery work making"
The other reviews are extremely old. I recently discovered this neighborhood after years on the H Street Corridor. A small flock of families with small children are moving as older residents move out for sunny climates. This is a neighborhood in transition. Not crime to gentrified but from older families to new families. A great deal of development is in the works to add to the spacious homes in this area. But as for eating options today--they are sparse but building.

"Very bullish on this neighborhood"
Brightwood is a neighborhood of approximately 7,476 residents located in the northwest section of the city adjacent to the Walter Reed Army Medical Center. The boundaries of the neighborhood are defined by Missouri Avenue N.W., 16th Street N.W., Aspen Drive N.W. and 5th Street N.W. The average price for a home sold here in 2010 was $387,891 with 26% of the homes being owner occupied. Homes here are generally your traditional "row home" style home found throughout Washington D.C. You will also find some multifamily structures as well as some commercial buildings as well.
there are a umber of schools here including Jewish Primary Day, Center City PCS - Brightwood and the Learning Book Scholastic Center. The Fort Stevens Recreation Center provides recreational facilities as does the nearby Emery Recreation Center. The neighborhood is adjacent to the Rock Creek Park, which is best dedicated green space in the city. Shopping and dining options are limited to neighborhood style stores and fast food type of restaurants. Currently there are 4 places of worship within Brightwood. Numerous Metro Bus stops are located strategically throughout the neighborhood.
Crime statistics indicate that the neighborhood's crime rate is better than one might expect, although crimes against people and property do occur. As always check recent crime statistics and make an informed decision as to the crime risk in any neighborhood. I am really positive about the future of this neighborhood because of the future redevelopment of the grounds of Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Can anyone say future massive mixed use project?

"undiscovered beauty"
Brightwood is right next to Walter Reed Medical Center and Rock Creek Park. The former has some job opportunities for now, though it will be closing in a couple years. There is a lot of speculation on what will happen once it is closed; some push for redevelopment. Given the overall value of land in DC, I would consider this to be the most likely outcome. This is also true because Brightwook is an undiscovered jewel in the city, where real estate is a bargain mainly because demand is low. Houses have beautiful front lawns, and turnover is very low. Most houses have been occupied by the same owner for decades, and have been proudly maintained. Even the apartment buildings are relatively small and well kept.
Brightwood is however mainly a bedroom community: besides the random fast food restaurant or the corner convenience store, you will have to drive for everything you need. but even this has its advantages: with few people passing through, there is little noise and less crime. For an inexpensive area of DC, this is exceptional. You can come home and relax, knowing you are away from it all. If you want a quiet place to raise a family, Brightwood is a good choice.
