I moved out from the midwest in 1990, and have been living in the Castro since. I've found the Castro to be an eclectic and vibrant place that's always got some crazy thing going on and an array of happenings, events, nightlife and a great sense of community- the people are caring and connected, and there's plenty of visitors and tourists arriving everyday to help me stay aware of what an amazing place this is to call home. Although known as a gay mecca- over the last 3 years, there's been lot's of changes in the demographics- and to good affect. The "gay ghetto" has grown up, and is itself becoming more diverse with many more straight people moving in and visiting...oh, and it's SO beautiful, too!
