"An older, somewhat run down area"
Chambers Heights is an older neighborhood that years ago used to be very nice. However, the years have not been good to it. There are some run-down homes and the crime rate is high. The homes more to the north seem to be worse than those on the south side. The local high school, Hinkley, is part of the Aurora Public School systems and is rated a 3 out of 10 on a scale of 1-10, with 10 being the highest. The school is predominantly Hispanic, followed by Black, then White, then Asian. Over 66% of the children attending this school are eligible for free or reduced price lunches, which is directly related to the income level of this area.
Due to the current economy, the schools have been hit hard. Hinkley had to let several teachers go in 2011, to much of the student body and parents dismay. Over 100 students protested, which leads one to believe that many of the students value their education.
Just to the northwest of this area are two new hospitals which have brought a new and brighter outlook to the area in general. To this point, this hasn't affected the Chambers Heights neighborhood, but the area is still in transition, so there is hope.
The area is also blocked in by all major roads which can experience high traffic, and the area of I-225 to the west of Chambers Heights is one of the worst although they are currently doing construction to improve this. While there are a few fast food restaurants nearby, there aren't many traditional sit-down types. Shopping includes a K-Mart and a King Soopers grocery store across East Colfax.
