Is Chelsea in New York City a safe neighborhood?

It's pretty safe, in general. East of 9th Avenue is a little sketchy late at night. And, I wouldn't be near the Meatpacking after 3 am (a lot of robberies). But, west of 9th, you're pretty safe at any of time of day or night.

AdamS Really JenMac? Would you still consider Meatpacking to be a bit shady at night? I'm looking at some apartments in Chelsea as well in a high-rise on W 28th St, west of 10th. What do you think of that area? It seems a little quite, but a lot of nice galleries and new apartments going up.
