I have recently worked with clients that have looked in Evanston, Park Ridge, Mount Prospect, Berwyn, Oak Park and Forest Park. Transportation, access to downtown and entertainment options have played a role in them looking in these areas. Depending on the neighborhood, each of these also allows for an affordable first home. South of the city gives easier access to Indiana / Michigan and the western suburbs while the northern areas give easier access to Wisconsin...if travel north or south of the city is important. If you have additional questions, I would be happy to help you. Good luck!

If you want to live outside the city, but still want to have some of the city feel and relatively quick city access, I would recommend looking in towns like Oak Park, Berwyn, Evanston and Park Ridge.
Some of these towns and specific areas in each will feel more urban / suburban.
Of course which one is best for you will be determined by what you like and like to do, as well as your needs re: work, shopping, entertainment, schools, etc. so drive around them and see what you think!

I think the best one is Evanston, where I recently moved. It's just barely North of the city, and it's right along the lake with a fantastic downtown with plenty to do. It's definitely the place to check out if you're looking to leave Chicago but haven't quite given up on the city life yet.

Evanston is my favorite, because it sits next to Lake Michigan, although there are many great suburbs surrounding Chicago. Many of my friends and clients think that having both the Metra and the CTA's Purple Line make Evanston a great choice for those leaving the city for the first time. There are a wide variety of homes in Evanston (condos, townhomes, two-flats, three-flats, detached homes, etc.) and the Northwestern University campus near downtown Evanston contributes to a youthful, lively city. My wife and I are homeowners in Evanston. My children attend Evanston's public schools, which has been a good experience for our family.

I have to agree on Evanston. With access to the lake, Metra and CTA trains and a nice downtown Evanston has many aspects to it that are similar to Chicago. There is a broad range of prices in Evanston, so it has something affordable for anyone that is considering moving there. The downtown is like a mini Chicago and can be great for those who miss the city. Really nothing else like the Evanston downtown in Illinois that I've seen.
