"Columbine is a spirited, diverse, and more affordable north Boulder secret"
The Columbine neighborhood is nicely tucked away in north central Boulder. It is centered around the public elementary school of Columbine Elementary. The school really is the heart of the neighborhood. The school was beautifully renovated in the last year or so PLUS the elementary is famous for its high percentage of latino students AND more importantly its amazing school spirit. My best friend's daughter has attended Columbine for the last 5 years and loves it, of all the elementary schools in Boulder (there are many) Columbine is the most respectful, happy and loving. The teachers and students actually like their school/jobs, that is more than stressed out Whittier Elementary can say where my daughter went to elementary.
It is funny how community spirit can thrive in a slightly under privileged environment. There is appreciation and courtesy in the neighborhood like a pocket of joy in north Boulder.
There are a lot of nice middle class homes in the neighborhood and most seem to take good care of their home and yard, which is more than many north boulder residents can boast. There are lots of kids and dogs and stroller and bikes and skateboarders and cars...yes it is a busy family neighborhood. There are child school crossing signs and speed bumps, its almost a joke in town how slow you HAVE to drive there. I get the feeling that even though homes are expensive (because it is Boulder) there are some good deals around Columbine and probably well taken care of. Some of the yards look surprisingly big.
If I was a family looking to move fairly close to central Boulder and wanted to buy a nice normal home with a yard I'd check out cozy Columbine. If I was a parent who appreciated the value of exposing my children to some diversity and wanted a happy spirited cooperative neighborhood I would definitely recommend Columbine.
