Would you recommend the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood in San Francisco for families with kids?

I love Haight-Ashbury and spend time there all the time and though I probably would have loved living there as a kid, my married friends say that Haight-Ashbury is just not for families with kids. Just way too much going on to raise kids. Unless you have really well-adjusted kids who are not easily tempted by all this area has to offer them in terms of sex, drugs and rock and roll, you probably will find other neigbhorhoods or the burbs a better choice.
