"Full of Charm and Yesteryear"
Hosford Abernathy is a very cool little community in SE Portland that is full of charm where everyone seems to know everyone. Reminiscent of days gone by, the personality of Hosford Abernathy is combined with other smaller neighborhoods, such as Clinton and Ladd’s Addition (bike commuters take note that these two communities have a bike path that goes directly to downtown Portland).
Homes are very nice here in the sense that they all (or majority of them) have great curb appeal. Many older homes have been renovated and highlight Portland’s great architectural history. Styles such as Victorian, Bungalow and Arts and Crafts make each neighborhood unique and noteworthy. In the days these homes were built, porches were popular as to promote a neighborhood sense of family and community. This lifestyle still seems evident today in Hosford Abernathy. Beautiful tree filled residential areas remind you of a time when your parents grew up, a real calling to yesteryear.
Take advantage of the nice parks and rose gardens that are very well cared for. The schools are some of the best in the area and have been acknowledged by the State of Oregon for a curriculum that includes healthy eating, nutrition and health. For families, it’s tough to beat Hosford Abernathy

"Urban Neighborhood Defying Easy Definition"
Southeast Portland's Hosford-Abernethy neighborhood is located south of SE Hawthorne Boulevard, north of SE Powell Boulevard, and between SE 30th Avenue and the Willamette River.
This is an area that defies easy definition. Most residents don't recognize this name, as the neighborhood is actually comprised of several smaller neighborhoods. For example, in the center of this area lies Ladd's Addition, a lovely historic area recognized by its X-shaped street grid. Towards the north of the neighborhood is Hawthorne Street, which anchors the popular Hawthorne District, where you'll find plenty of shopping and dining options. The riverfront, meanwhile is home to the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, or OMSI. This area is filled with tourists, while other parts of Hosford-Abernethy, home to cute cafes and quirky shops, are hidden gems known only to locals. Overall, the neighborhood seems very pedestrian-friendly, and many of the residents commute by bike.
Because of this mix of different neighborhoods, Hosford-Abernethy seems like it could be whatever you want it to be, whether you're after quiet residential areas or a bustling commercial center. Homes in the neighborhood are as varied as the residents; you'll find beautiful examples of historic architecture, all the way up to modern condos and apartments.
This is a neighborhood whose atmosphere seems to change block by block. Some homes are modest and affordable, while others are rundown, and still others are amazing, well-kept historic homes on tree-lined streets. There are also a number of apartments and condos, making it affordable for new residents to move here. Homeowners and rentals, families and singles, you'll find it all in Hosford-Abernethy.

"An ideal neighborhood for everyone"
This is my neighborhood and I love it! One of the best things about the Hosford / Abernathy neighborhood is that it is a great fit for a wide variety of different types of people. I recommend it to singles, retired folks, and everyone in between. First of all, it is chockfull of locally owner boutiques, restaurants, bars and assorted stores. It also has a very friendly neighborhood vibe. To get a feel for this area, picture beautiful trees, lots of bikers, people waving to one another and interesting architecture. You will see everything from bungalows, arts and crafts homes to modern condos.
One of my favorite things about this area is that a car really isn't necessary to get around. There is a great local organic grocery store called New Seasons right in the middle of the neighborhood and it is a very easily accessible hub. I also walk to restaurants and entertainment. I also frequently take walks through Ladd's addition where you can see various rose gardens throughout Spring, Summer and Fall. If you are considering buying or renting in this area, don't hesitate to do so! I can't think of many drawbacks to this area. While prices can be high, if you are looking for something less expensive, head south towards Powell Blvd and you should be able to find some lower prices.
