"Independent for a reason"
Bordering the North 610 Loop and Interstate 45, in North Houston is where you will find the Historic area of Independence Heights. This location is just north of the well known “Houston Heights”. Main roads traveled here are Yale, Crosstimbers, and North Shepherd.
Independence Heights is a fairly run-down area populated primarily by African-American residents. Real estate located here is less than appealing to the eye, both commercial and residential. Strip centers line the streets with pedestrians strolling the parking lots. Residential neighborhoods are filled with affordable, single family homes that tend to be extremely outdated. You can find restaurants and entertainment within a short driving distance, but not really in the neighborhood. This is certainly not an area I would want to bring my children to live, due to the high crime rate along with the unsightly area.
