Are there any safe areas to live in and pay $1000 in rent? And still commute to NYC?

Currently living in Brooklyn and can no longer afford it. Looking to relocate anywhere remotely nearby if I can pay $1000 a month to rent and am in a safe neighborhood. Any ideas?
