"Kim is synonymous with remote"

Kim is a tiny town on the southeastern edge of Colorado right by the New Mexico border. There are only 74 residents here, 53 white, 20 Hispanic, and 1 of two or more races combined. This little town was much busier in years gone by, prior to the dust bowl. You can still see some great remnants of the past in the old stone and old brick buildings. They give an insight into what was probably the center of a much busier town than it has been in years. Now, some of those old buildings, although beautiful, are sadly abandoned. There are also some not so nice buildings that have been surrendered as well and look as if they should be put out of their misery.

There are two schools here, an elementary and a combined junior/senior high school. Outside of that, there is a small gas station but not much else. According to data on the town, a good portion of the residents work in professional, scientific, and technical services, although I can't imagine in what or for who, unless it's for the state. There are still some small farms around the area.

The cost of living in Kim is really very low, as are the housing prices. Unfortunately, over 26% of the residents here are below the poverty level. There are no real jobs here and even shopping and dining are just over an hour away in La Junta.

I wouldn't recommend Kim to anyone outside of somebody looking for cheap ranching land. There are no amenities and nothing to do here.
Pros
  • very affordable land/homes
Cons
  • no stores or restaurants
  • remote
  • far from Front Range

"Kim is a one horse town"

The tiny town of Kim is out in the southeast corner of the plains area of Colorado just about 20 miles north of the New Mexico border. Kim only has about 65 people living in the farming and cowboy community along HW 160 east out of Trinidad.

There are some traditional farms, cattle farms and local ranches with horses, there is a love of the west and a love for horses out here. The place is so small that if you drive along HW 160, the highway turns then you pass through Kim in a blink and the HW curves again.

The mean house cost in Kim is around $55,000 and a trailer in or around Kim goes for about $25,000. The area is very affordable, but the small community has very little shopping options and work is definitely centered around agriculture and livestock. There are some neat historic stone buildings in town and some old stone barns in the area giving it a southwest feel.
Pros
  • very affordable land/homes
Cons
  • far from Front Range
  • limited shopping
