Is Lower East Side in New York City a safe neighborhood?

It's rowdy but pretty safe. Some of the most bizarre things I've ever seen in New York were in the Lower East Side. It's a little sketchy in the southern areas, but for the most part, it's so crowded at night because of the bar and restaurant scene that you're pretty safe.
