A NYC streetfood gets a make-over
The humble pretzel which is one of NYC's most ubiquitous street foods is getting special treatment at by the chefs at the city's many upscale restaurants..why even M&M's are launching a new flavor which is inspired by the pretzel!

Do you eat pretzels? which ones do you favor? I am pretty down market and get my regular fix from a local grocery with Snyder's of Hanover Pretzel Pieces(Jalapeno) being my favorite ones.. you?

I friggin love the Jalapeno pretzel from Auntie Anne's. Yeah, it's not a street vendor pretzel, but the street vendor ones are kinda stale and gross.

@Uptowngirl: I'm not into pretzels. I am a potato chip man. My girlfriend loves pretzels and buys bags of them.

@JenMac I didn't know Auntie Anne's had a jalapeno pretzel.. gotta try that asap.
@hhusted I love potato crisps as well.. but try and limit myself to Trader Joe's reduced guilt kettle chips. I really wish that we got potato crisps is small 100 calorie bags here like the ones you get in England. Then its really easy to satisfy your craving and control binging as well.

@Uptowngirl: You keep saying "potato crisps." Don't you mean "potato chips," or is what you said common in India. I'm not insulting you. I'm just curious.

@hhusted they say crisps in England.. in India the term used in Wafers.. I tend to say crisps as when I go to London, I always make it a point to buy a multi flavor bag of Walkers crisps ..I love them especially the sour cream and onion ones and I am really thankful that they come pre-packaged in the single serving bags. That way you can have one and satisfy your craving without going crazy.

@uptowngirl I wish I could go to the pool every morning! I had coffee flavored gelato for breakfast, so I guess I should be making it a morning habit to get to the gym.
@JenMac Auntie Anne's reminds me of the mall... Don't they have one of those in every mall in America?

I love all treats bread-related, and the pretzel is of course no exception. I think I am going to need to find myself a Rusty Knot Pretzel Dog....
I also am a big fan of salty-sweet chocolate, so I hope the new M&M is as delicious as it sounds!

I was reading about the benefits of a mostly raw food diet... What do you guys think? Anyone know anything about it?
@uptowngirl I am not much of a snacker. Occasionally I will spring for a chocolate treat or something of from the sweet bread variety, but that's about it. I do sometimes eat meals while I write...very carefully.

@Neversleeps: Auntie Anne's is totally a mall thing. But, it doesn't lessen the deliciousness of that pretzel.
@BroadwayBK -- I wonder about the raw food diet. How do you clean out your liver with hardly any protein? And, living in NY where most people tend to dine out or on the go -- how do you keep it up without living at Pure Food and Wine?

@Uraniumfish @uptowngirl Ugh.. the caveman people are pretty creepy. But I guess that is sort of a version of a raw food diet?
@JenMac I have no idea - the whole raw food thing seems like it would be A LOT of effort. I was a vegan for a month (which is a great way to lose 10 lbs really fast), and I had to cook at home almost all of the time, especially if I wanted to make sure I was getting all of my nutritional needs met. I guess the only other way to live such a life, besides living at Pure Food and Wine, is to order from RAWvolution every week - a rather expensive habit. Either that or you have to love mashing and dicing your own raw food all the time?

All the raw food people I've met look a little too thin for my tastes - and not in a natural, this is obviously just a skinny person kind of way. And I don't see how you can't be hungry all the time if all you're consuming is fruits, veggies and nuts.

I agree. I'm all about a strict diet of natural foods, but I don't skip the meat. Never met a vegan who actually looked healthy and non-yellow in the face, so that's pretty good motivation for me not to turn vegan.

@Everyone there are tons of strict vegetarians who live in India but even then the country has one of the highest rates of diabetes so a vegetarian diet is not necessarily all that healthy as it is made out to be.

@uptowngirl A veggie diet can be carb overload if you're not careful. I think if you limit your dietary intake in any way you really have to go out of your way to make sure that you are getting a balanced intake of nutrients.

I actually knew a dude who was a vegan for a year, and then his stomach suddenly took on a starving child puffed-out quality. He went to the doctor, who informed him he wasn't getting the proper vitamins and minerals. The doc recommended a diet of beans and rice. The guy went back to being just a regular vegetarian after that.

I got really into homeopathy and natural healing because I was constantly having problems with sinuses, colds, severe chronic fatigue, depression, etc. These are all the most common symptoms of gluten issues. I know it sounds pretty broad, but I started with one problem and kept tracking it back more and more. Problems digesting gluten lead to malabsorption of vitamins which leads to metal overloads which leads to candida overgrowth and adrenal fatigue. This puts strain on your thyroid which (as if you didn't have enough problems with all of that) messes up your hormones and then your skin, nerves, digestive track etc all goes to hell in a handbasket. All because of friggin wheat products.

@NeverSleeps some folks are just nutty I guess.. I know this because I met a woman who refused to wear a silk sari( the Indian national dress which is often made of silk) because she was vegan and apparently many silk worms are killed to extract one meter of silk. She would wear only silk that is ethically produced strangely enough there is a company in India called Ahimsa Silk that has devised and patented a way to extract silk from the worms without killing them. I really wouldn't go to such extremes myself.
@JenMac thanks for the insight..luckily I dont have the symptoms that you describe at the moment though being allergic to gluten must be tough..you basically have to cut out many carbs don't you? what do you substitute it with ? Rice? Barley?

Wow, I can't imagine having such a huge swath of foods that you can't eat. It must be a huge drag when you travel, since not every place on this planet has as many specialty offerings as NYC, and then, you know, there's just the pleasure of eating certain things that you miss out on.

Indeed! I eat almost everything - I'm certainly up for TRYING everything - and I found traveling to Turkey with a vegan quite difficult, as we had to spend a lot of time searching for vegan food in an environment not entirely conducive to it.

I tried to date a vegan, but eventually gave up. There were other problems, of course, but the vegan thing would have been a real bummer in the long term if it had otherwise worked out. I always felt guilty about what I was eating, too. In the end I would end up just behaving like a vegan when I was with her.

@Everyone its certainly very difficult to live with/date someone whose dietary habits have tons of restrictions/ limitations. We are indeed extremely lucky to live in a city that offers a plethora of diverse foods that can meet almost all needs but as Uraniumfish said not many other cities in the world are like NYC and traveling to foreign lands which dont have similar offerings can be put a real dampener on a vacation. I have friends who are strict vegetarians back home , they have religious restrictions and are not allowed to eat vegetables that grow under the ground like potatoes, onions etc. I try not to have them over for meals for I really dont know how to cook meals without the use of basic ingredients like onions, ginger etc which are needed to cook any form of curry!

@DBlack That's interesting. A guy I am dating now says he used to feel guilty eating meat around his vegetarian ex. He doesn't eat pork, but I don't think twice about eating pork dishes around him. Not that I can't see how it would be a downer - I completely agree. I just don't think I would give myself a guilt trip; it's merely annoying to have to cater to someone's habits if they're not your own. Someone with allergies or intolerances is more forgivable somehow.
