City Gardening
I was raised in a family that always had a garden – albeit we lived in Florida rather than an urban area like New York City. Still, I’ve always been in the habit of keeping plants around me, even if it is a bit harder to keep them alive in my dark Brooklyn apartment.
I’ve had to look for more creative ways to get my hands on fresh foods, as it is pretty difficult to grow things like tomatoes with no backyard, front yard or worthy roof. Obviously the Greenmarkets are a great source of fare that is both local and fresh, and the CENYC (Council on the Environment of NYC), which hosts the Greenmarkets, offers “open space greening.”
This means that anyone interested in open space for gardening or horticulture can volunteer with the CENYC staff in their office or community gardens located throughout the city.
