Cloverfield movie - what neighborhood was it shot in?
I just saw the movie Cloverfield and yet again, New York City is the star. I was wondering whether anyone saw them shooting this movie? Looks to be around Soho?

It was shot late at night - Lower East Side, mainly on Orchard St.

It's amazing how many movies they shoot in NYC, i guess so many people want to 'fantasize' about our great city :)

While it sounds exciting - it must start to annoy locals who have to put up with traffic from blocked streets. I'm hoping the city gets paid alot of money for the inconvenience.

Is it expensive to shoot in NYC? Or can it be done easily?

@Everybody: I read somewhere online that producers are going to stop filming in NYC because of the cost and inconvenience of doing so. Not sure when it will happen. But I do remember reading about it in a tabloid about insider news from Hollywood.

I don't know about New York City but New York State offers tax credits for filmmakers who chose to shoot their movies within New York state. These two studies listed below give you an idea.

Apparently the NYC film industry is the second largest in the nation which employs a whole horde of people. In fact NY state is considering extending its highly successful tax breaks for filmmakers program which has been beneficial to the city as it has encouraged even international filmmakers to use NYC as a backdrop in their movies.

@Uptowngirl: Well, if the source I read is true, then those links you supplied are voided. I hope your links are more accurate.

@hhusted the last link I have provided is a recent report from the NY comptrollers office which has been quoted by the Crains business website which is very well respected business site and I am sure they check their facts before publishing them. One of the movies the report has mentioned is a Bollywood movie that was shot in NYC so I do believe the report is valid for it was difficult or expensive to shoot here a producer from India was hardly going to come all the way to the US to shoot his movie.
