I think I just realized that the sweet shops I tend to visit all specialize in cupcakes... and I've already dished out all my favorites. Obviously I need to branch out!
@JenMac That Sweet Revenge place has cupcake, wine and beer pairings! I think I am in heaven...or will be, once I get to Sweet Revenge.

@BroadwayBK I was inspired by your list however there are times when I crave desserts other than cupcakes.. something nutty and not as sweet ..that seems to be my current preference hence the search for new dessert places.

@uptowngirl Glad to be offering inspiration, anyway. I am a big fan of dark chocolate + almonds, myself. But I just never realized how often I treat myself to cupcakes because I can't even think of a bakery that doesn't specialize in them... except City Bakery, but other than hot chocolate and chocolate chip cookies I think their offerings tend to gravitate more toward buffet-style salads and lunch items.

@BroadwayBK gotta to tell you that I have been beating the heat with these fun chocolate ices that I am making at home. One evening I was at Bed Bath and Beyond downtown and found these popsicle moulds made by a company called Tovolo. They were cheap at $10 a box , Williams Sonoma sells similar ones for $50 anyway I bought them and forgot all about them. A couple of weeks ago I found a recipe for chocolate ices in one of my books and proceeded to make them using the Tovolo moulds. they have turned out pretty good and are absolutely yummy at least I think so.

I love tasti-d-lite too, @hhusted! It's a staple of my NYC diet. Also consider E.A.T. on Madison Avenue and - I believe - 76th street for great light meals and even greater cakes...

@everyone do you hear the ice cream truck in your neighborhood? when I am in London during the summer months I always have a hear out for the jingle of the ice cream truck, though I do see ice cream trucks in NYC.. I dont really hear the sweet little jingle that spells summer to m. Do any of you?

@uptowngirl OH MAN. There must be hundreds of ice cream trucks in my neighborhood. Either that or there is one that is constantly circling my block. IT NEVER ENDS. At least, not until winter. But I have to say, in the city I noticed that ice cream trucks like Van Leeuwen just park some place, much like any other food car. The wandering Mister Softees and whatnot seem to be a Brooklyn phenomena? Of course, I can't speak for the other outer boroughs.

There used to be Mr. Softee's outside the Hunter College High School playground on 94th and Madison. Not sure if they're still there, though....

The summer's making me eat a lot of desserts for some reason. I'm not usually a sweets and cheeses kind of guy, but lately I feel like at least one meal is a variety of cake.

It's having the opposite effect on me - I guess I just like desserts that are more conducive to winter, like...hot chocolate. I've never been much of an ice cream fan.

Summer has found me at the Park Slope Five Guys more often than is necessary. I do see the Mr. Softee truck once in a while - but I almost never hear it. Maybe the residents here have outlawed the little tune they usually play?

@NeverSleep Ah-ha maybe some crotchety old influential biddies have had Mr.Softee's tune outlawed in Manhattan as well wouldn't put anything past them. They usually complain about everything.

@Everybody: I love to have a cold desert on a hot and humid day. Couple that with a tall glass of ginger ale or a mixture of selter water and apple juice. Now that is a treat.
Instead of going out and buying one every night. We buy sherbet or frozen yogurt and mix it with regular yogurt, topped with honey. What a treat.

@Uraniumfish In most of Asia people try and beat the stifling heat but consuming a dessert called Ais Kacang or Halo Halo in the Philippines. It consists mainly of a mountain of shaved ice which is adorned with syrups, condensed/evaporated milk, mung beans, palm fruit, jellies and what not .. of course it takes some getting used to but as an icy treat its fabulous. You can actually sample it in Chinatown in Manhattan at a Malaysian restaurant called Jaya which is located on the confluence of Baxter and Bayard street. Its not as fatty as ice cream but still does the trick.

@JenMac I can relate.. the heat makes me so sleepy and lethargic that all I want to do is go to bed ..moreover I am currently fighting a stomach bug which I suspect I contacted from eating overripe fruit and I am loaded up with meds which make me feel worse and make me crave cool lemonade all the time!

@uptowngirl Watch out for food spoiling especially in this kind of heat! And I wonder about some of the street vendors refrigerating their foods properly, especially the meats, for all the hours they stand out in the street with their carts. What happens afterward is no joke!

Speaking of dessert, I must say the best sweet thing of all on a nice summer day is a nice ripe peach! All the ice cream or cake in the world can't approximate the sugary deliciousness of a fresh peach, particularly a white peach. They're my favorites!

Man - last night I went to a reggae concert in Williamsburg (cough, cough), and it turns out that Williamsburg is pretty dangerous after a reggae concert. After some late night banh mi and some late night pizza, we got some late night ice cream at the late night ice cream truck. I may never eat again.

@NeverSleeps Ha. Williamsburg does have way too many late night eateries. Or, if you are in a certain state, just enough.
@everyone I've been in the mood for some Bavarian cream. Do we know where I can get some?!
