Favorite New York City movies

We all know that numerous Hollywood
(and even Bollywood movies)have used New York City as their backdrop. Since I grew up overseas these movies helped create an image of NYC that was always glamorous and exciting of course the reality as I know now is quite different . Even then whenever I watch a movie that is shot in New York City I still feel a sense of belonging as if it is 'my city' and I am happy to be a part of it.

1. Saturday Night Fever- 1977 This started it all.. Tony Manero and his white pantsuit shimmied and shuffled his way into my heart as he strutted his stuff at that Brooklyn night club.
2. Kramer v/s Kramer- 1979 introduced me to Dustin Hoffman and educated me about divorce
3. Tootsie- 1982 Dustin Hoffman cross dresses and becomes Dorothy Michaels padded bra et al.
4. The Pope of Greenwich Village - 1984 a obscure movie set in Greenwich Village which starred Eric Roberts( Julia Roberts' brother).
5. Desperately Seeking Susan- 1985 lace gloves, dark eyeliner, exposed bra straps, chandelier earrings, messy hair and a phenomenon called Madonna.
6. Moonstruck- 1987- adorable Cher and Nicholas Cage romance
7. Wall Street- 1987 Gordon Gekko and all his greed rings true even today
8. When Harry Met Sally-1989 Meg Ryan's unforgettable orgasm scene shot at Katz's Delicatessen of all places.
9. As Good As it Gets -1997 brilliant Jack Nicholson plays a grouchy old sod.
10. Youve Got Mail-1998 -love in the Internet age.
11. Autumn in New York- 2000- weepy starring Richard Gere and Winona Ryder
12. Maid in Manhattan- 2002- Jennifer Lopez and Ralph Fiennes fairytale romance all over Manhattan
13. Something's Gotta Give-2003- Diane Keaton and Jack Nicholson star in this feel good ' mature' romantic comedy.
14. Hitch- 2005 romantic comedy Will Smith as a love guru- and Eva Mendes
15. The Devil wears Prada- 2007 -behind the scenes at a high fashion 'glossy' rumored to be none other than Vogue.
16. Sex and the City -The movie- 2008 depicting the life for four NYC singletons based on the hugely successful TV series of the same name
17. Julie and Julie-2009 my current favorite movie- a delightful movie where Chef Julia Child's recipes are tried out by blogger Julie Powell in her tiny L.I.C kitchen

Hey, thanks for the list. Everything looks interesting. I did not see many of them but the ones I did see I liked. The one movie that really stood out recently was Avatar. That was incredible. I would recommend that to anyone. What a movie.

I loved Wall Street. Michael Douglas acted his butt off. He was terrific in the movie. I also saw Moonstruck. Every time I pass a Moonstruck diner in NYC, I think about Cher.

You beat me to it! Excellent list and excellent idea for a list. How about the edgier stuff too, like Taxi Driver. I'll think up more, just need a day or two.

Ghost Dog by Jim Jarmusch, our very own beloved film boy making indie films in the city.

Oh, I'm going to have fun with this list.

I know. There are probably plenty of movies that will come to mind. Just think back a few years and you or someone else may think about a couple not on the list.

I'm watching a great TV series. I know it is not a movie, but it did get its start from a TV pilot. This is Heros. What action and suspense. You can't wait till the next adventure starts.

Just found this list on wikipedia, which is a decent starter list and at the bottom has a very nice category: "New York City destroyed on film"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_films_set_in_New_York_City

However, they don't have any works listed by any of our local-boy filmmakers like Jim Jarmusch, Altmann, et al. who didn't always make Hollywood blockbusters but nevertheless produced films important to film history. So I'm not done yet!

Perhaps NYC is best known for Law and Order shows. Although, I do know there were a ton of movies made in the '20s, '30s, '40s, and early '50s that were filmed in NYC.

@uptowngirl, One more to update on your list - Cloverfield. Great monster flick (though you might get seasick from the hand held camera first perspective footage). Great destruction of the Statue of Liberty, Brooklyn Bridge, Time Warner Center. Then eventual finale in Central Park. I loved it.

What was Cloverfield about? Was it a sea creature that attacked NYC? Exactly what kind of monster was it? I never saw the movie but may watch it on DVD.

Oh my, what I just remembered: The very last part of Planet of the Apes. With the statue of Liberty buried in the sand?

It seems like there is always a movie being filmed here, so this list could quite possibly go on forever.

I have to add one of my favorites: The Royal Tenenbaums.

Someone put together a list of memorable scene locations from the movie as well: http://www.rushmoreacademy.com/academy/films/tenenbaums/library/locations.html

Hey, uptowngirl, I nearly forgot about Ghostbusters. Why should I. Hey, I watched every movie and would sing the theme song sometimes. Thanks for posting that one.
