Giuliani puts foot in mouth

Here's one about Giuliani's recent major re-writing of history:

I'm really very relieved he didn't get far in the last presidential primaries. The fact that he happened to be mayor of a city when it was attacked by terrorists doesn't automatically make him a hero, or deserving of a presidential nomination.

That's right. I didn't like him when he was mayor. I thought he was ugly looking. He may have helped keep crime down, but he didn't do well in other areas. Between Giuliani and Bloomberg, which mayor do you prefer?

@Uraniumfish I know you're not the only one who's relieved. Though I never really felt like he had a real shot at the presidency anyway.... Being the mayor of New York City doesn't automatically qualify you to be "leader of the free world" by any means.

I love how the media is having a field day with this, though who could blame them.

Giuliani wrote a book on leadership. I was told by someone he hired a ghostwriter to create it. I can't confirm that. I also believe he got famous because of all the media hype, not so much for the book he wrote. Anyone know about this?

Oh, just as a side note: As a full time writer and author, I can more or less accept the fact Rudy used a ghostwriter, since most celebrities, sports heros, and other well known people don't have the ability or time to write, so they hire a ghostwriter to do it for them. Sarah Palin hired a ghostwriter. That was public knowledge. And if it wasn't, I know the reporter at NY Times who knew Sarah and he told me who the ghostwriter was. I can't say because of confidentiality.

Too bad politicians can't hire someone to move their mouths for them.

Just read an article about Obama's new speech writer in the Times, but I can't seem to find it now to post here. It analyzed the switch from Favreau to this new guy, really interesting...

I hope you find it. I would love to read it. Sounds really interesting, especially if it is about Obama.

Now I know why I couldn't find it. It was actually in the Washington Post.

As a native NYer, I get offended when Giuliani goes on and on about 9/11. I like to think that what makes us strong as a city is our ability to move on and encourage each other to stay strong - NOT afraid, NOT in fear of another attack, NOT reacting irrationally and bombing every country that looks at us the wrong way. We were the ones to suffer most on 9/11; our trauma shouldn't be used to score political points. Cheesy as it was, I do love the bit at the end of Spiderman when New Yorkers come to rally to the defense of Peter Parker because "we're New Yorkers!"

Well, we are!

Would you consider someone not born here a real true New Yorker. Just asking. I really find NYC to be as fascinating place. Even if it does have its down side. By the way Uraniumfish, thanks for the link. I greatly appreciate it. Very interesting reading that's for sure.

In the case of Giuliani putting his foot in his mouth on this particular occasion, he seems to have forgotten about 9/11 rather than going on about it.

I don't think 9/11 is hard to forget. Every time we hear the news or walk around the area where the WTC stood, we are reminded of it.

Which is the beautiful irony of his little gaffe, considering 9/11 was the only thing in Giuliani's bag of tricks for his presidential bid.

@hhusted - not at all! The beauty of NYC is that it's been a place for immigrants - whether literal international immigrants or those from other part of the US looking to make it here!

That said, I can't resist making fun of the new NYU/Columbia students who think they "know" NYC and all its nooks and crannies and bars/restaurants/secrets after Freshman Orientation Week, but it's all in good-natured fun!

Remember the words in the song New York, "If you can make it here, you can make it anywhere."

I have to agree with that one.
