Good Samaritan French Tourist

You must have all heard about the daring rescue of a two year old girl, who slipped and fell into the freezing waters of the East River at the South Street Seaport. The father of the little girl , David Anderson dived into the water after a French tourist had already plunged in and grabbed her. The news channels all seem to be talking about the dad while the real usung hero in this tale, is the tourist who is yet to be identified. We as New Yorkers tend to get irritated by tourists but this time around we should applaud his quick thinking and immediate action which saved the life of this little girl.

Apparently the good Samaritan french tourist has been identified as an engineering student from Lyon who when he was thanked by the Daily News said his reaction was not uncommon and anyone would have done the same.. the newscasters this morning on the Today show were skeptical about that..but I think he is right. Most people would have dived in to save that moppet.

Indeed! Although I will be extra nice to tourists this week, just because.

Well I hope a dad would plunge into the water after his little girl! Jeez. But that tourist is cool - do you guys think you would have jumped into the East River that quick? Isn't it a long way down to the water from the Seaport?

I feel sheepish for saying so, but I don't know that I would have just jumped in right away. I guess I would hope for a minute that other (stronger) people would go in . . .and, then if no one did . . . man, I still don't know. It's so dangerous. You just never know how you're going to react until you're in the situation, I suppose.

@JenMac I would have thought it over first, too. I would have dialed 911, at least.

As a small, weak girl, I'm not sure I could have helped much - but I like to think I would have tried!

I am a decent swimmer but aren't you supposed to be trained to go after panicked people in the water? They could pull you under... I am thinking you would have to be a really strong person to rescue someone who is drowning.

@NeverSleeps I too am a decent swimmer but I dont know if I would have been able to dive into the freezing water if I had been on the scene though kudos to the guy who did so.
