New York Speak
NYC has its own nomenclature for various goods and services in the city. I have mentioned some in another thread-http://www.streetadvisor.com/new_york/forums/tips-and-tricks-for-living-in-nyc and I just came across this piece
http://slice.seriouseats.com/archives/2010/07/how-to-order-a-slice-of-pizza-in-nyc.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+seriouseats%2Fnewyork+%28Serious+Eats%3A+New+York%29&utm_content=Google+Reader
which educates newbies/ out-of- towners on the art of ordering pizza in the city. Would you like to add some more NYC advice?

Dim sum in Chinatown is a very special ritual which can be botched by the uninitiated. There are a lot of touristy Chinatown dim sum places, which any self-respecting connoisseur would sniffle at. Only a few great dim sum restaurants exist, and you have to know which they are and go there. It will seem like another country. For all the carts whisking by are labeled only in Chinese and the newbie might be terrified by the sight of some of the more exotic dishes (chicken feet) and the fact that you may well be the only non-Chinese in the place that day. You might want to clean your chopsticks in the jasmine tea like the old timers, and calmly point to the dishes you think you might want (anything in the shrimp dumpling family? looove it) Careful not to go for the dessert dishes too early on (sometimes hard to tell, as they can look like dumplings too. Sweet custard desserts friggin kill me!
Ah, it might be time for another dim sum experience soon.

@Uraniumfish Any suggestions as to which places are the great dim sum restaurants?

At least Chinatown has some authentic places. I can't say i've seen a single "authentic" restaurant in Little Italy - I've probably seen more authentic Chinese restaurants there than authentic Italian ones! Then again, I tend to be picky about this sort of thing, and to be fair, "Authentic" Italian-American and "authentic" Italian (or more likely, "Authentic" Roman/Milanese/Neopolitan/Ligurian/etc) are two different cuisines, and I tend to stick to the latter

Yes uraniumfish tell us which dim sum places make the grade in Chinatown? I usually go to Golden Unicorn though I have been to Jing Fong as well..I once invited some of my Singaporean friends along and they went on to order chicken feet which my husband remembers until this day!

@uptowngirl Yeah the chicken feet are a memorable sight!
@Everybody Okay, I'll look into a couple of names of dim sum places for you.

I just don't know how I'd be with the sight of chicken feet while I'm trying to eat!

@DBlack the husband is still traumatized by the sight and never fails to mention it to all and sundry.

Eh, I'm a huge "weird food" fan. Brains, intestines, cheeks, eyeballs - I actually really like the taste of lesser-known animal parts, and am all for "offal" as they say!

It's pretty funny to me when people can't bear the sight of a fish head on their plate or the nearness of the chicken feet on the table - we're so civilized these days that most of us don't even think of where our food came from in the first place!
I guess I've never tasted anything really weird, though, unless liver counts. But I did enjoy the liver.

I've had chicken feet and lived, but I certainly understand why the sight of them can be traumatic. They really are kind of scary looking.

@NeverSleeps fish-head curry is a delicacy in Malaysia and I confess that I have had a couple and brain is quite yummy as well but nowadays I seem to have gone off 'offal' though I am curious to know as to how the chicken feet tasted.. crunchy I presume?

I've had my share of livers and brains but I don't know that I can venture as far as those crazy claws! Even pigs feet and ox tail look mostly harmless by comparison. It's just something about the look of those things.

Yeah, I'm pretty squeamish about that sort of thing too. I feel positively nauseated every time I dine with my father and he gets escargot.

@JenMac then you will need a cast iron stomach to visit a city like Hong Kong at my local wet market .i.e.open air market there are snouts, tails, weird chunks of meat , fish heads and what not..the ox tails freak me out..

Lately I haven't been eating much meat, and because of this I actually find it hard to eat rich meats like duck - I don't know how I would deal with brain!
I do love a good escargot, however.

I would like to think that I'm somewhat adventurous with food; but, I recently ate at Daniel and I noticed that though I had the opportunity to eat some really creative things that would surely be amazing . . . I stuck to things like veal. Oh well.

@BroadwayBK From what I remember of brain, it actually seemed light. Certainly not the feel or texture of meat, which has fibers from the muscles.

@Uraniumfish Did you find it was fatty? The brain seems like it would be full of lipids.

@NeverSleeps Could be that it's full of lipids, but it didn't SEEM fatty. It doesn't have the consistency you'd associate with meat, but rather of something like a cooked and hardened pudding.

@Uraniumfish I do think its dreadfully unhealthy and full of cholesterol and other bad for your heart stuff, its usually quite a delicacy in Pakistani cuisine but most caution that you should eat it sparingly.

I've had it breaded and fried and it was pretty great! And I don't think my once-in-an-aeon consumption of brain is going to do much harm. I mean, balanced diet means being able to branch out in many directions, without overdoing any one thing.

Anyone ever tried jellyfish? Supposedly they know what they're doing with it at Blue Ribbon Sushi in Soho/Park Slope.
Also, brain tacos are apparently a relatively common staple of Mexican cuisine. Do those of you who have tried brain feel like this would be a tasty dish?

I think the brain I had was cow's brain (at a restaurant known for its rather swank cuisine in Joigny, France). It was really good - but that said, I prefer liver and kidney, all else being equal.

@BroadwayBK Goat is the meat of choice in India where many meat eaters are Hindu and so do not eat Beef because they consider the cow to be sacred.
