New York Zoo

So i was thinking about taking my family for a vacation to New York and wanted to go to the zoo. I have been told lots about the zoo over there and it sounds amazing! I was told it was super huge. I haven't really done my research on it, but just wanted to get a New York natives opinion on it. How big is it really? Is it so big i should break up my visit into 2 days, considering i have a 2 year old that is going?

What do you think? What other good places in should i put on my "list of things to do while in New York"? Child friendly places that is.

Thanks n advance!!

You've got to take them to the statue of liberty, one of my favorite memories as a kid is going to the green lady, it'll definitly be something they don't forget

You know i completely forgot about the statue of liberty! I've only ever seen it in pictures and i think that would be an amazing place to go!

Is there a building there that people can go on top of? I've seen it in movies but can't figure out what it is called? I think that would be awesome to see the city from so high up!

Landee: The Bronx Zoo is excellent. The only problem with that is the nearby neighborhood. Very poor area and a lot of gang violence. I know. I lived down the street from the place. You would do better to see the Empire State Building or Central Park for that matter.

But can't you get to the zoo pretty easily with public transportation, @hhusted? I wouldn't know - whenever I went as a kid it was for a field trip and we'd have a school bus...

Yeah, the Empire State Building. I think that would be a great place to go.

@hhusted I didn't realize it was in a not so good part of town. Well i'm sure there are lots of other things we can find to do right? Are there any good kids museums or something similar? I just need to find kid friendly places.

@Ajadedidealist: Yeah, if you want to take a train that is full of low life people. I lived in the area for two years and took the 2 or 5 train all the time, and let me tell you the people on the train were very shady. Every time I rode on the train, there were cops around. There had to be. People got robbed all the time.

Say, does anyone know of any good entertainment for the adults? ie. comedy clubs, shows, etc. I've always wanted to go to a broadway play. Any suggestions on which shows would be the best and which comedy clubs are good?

@landee: The Moth is one of the best things to do in New York - look it up at Moth.org. It's a story telling show and it's unreal. The best standup show, in my opinion, is Leo Allen's show "Whiplash" on Monday nights at 11 at UCB. As far as a great NY comedy experience, there is a show call ASSSSSS cat at UCB on Sunday nights. It's an improv show and the entire cast is 30 Rock, SNL and the Daily show writers / performers. It's really cool and always really funny.
Play wise: Our Town in the west village has been playing forever and it is really exceptional. There isn't a lot that's getting well-reviewed on Broadway right now and probably won't be til summer. But, check out the Bridge Project at the BAM. It's directed by Sam Mendes.

"Next Fall' on Broadway has been getting really good reviews and is supposed to be a good play. Haven't seen it yet, though...

@Landee: Whatever you do, have fun and enjoy yourself. Isn't that what a vacation is all about.

@landee I would suggest going to Top of the Rock - the observation deck on top of Rockefeller Center - before going to the Empire State Building. The view is really amazing - it includes the Empire State Building, and I would have to say that as far as views of the city go you really can't beat it.

Which zoo, Landee? There's the big, famous, Bronx Zoo, and the smaller, more intimate, but also more central Central Park Zoo
