So thankful for the city

I have been following the horrific Cheshire home invasion case on the NYT site and have been deeply affected by it.

I am even more thankful now that I live in a big city, in an apartment building which has a 24 hour doorman. I have never wanted to live in isolation in the suburbs. This horrible, horrible case just confirms my feelings.

@Uptowngirl: Just because you may live in a big city, with an 24-hour doorman, doesn't mean you are not going to get robbed. There could be some shady neighbors in the building. Someone could come into your building, stab or shoot the doorman, and start breaking into every apartment in the building.

In fact, according to crime statistics in NYC, such crimes are on the rise. So, as long as you live in the city of NY, you are not safe. You may stand more of a chance to get killed in the suburbs. That is true. I'm just saying you are not immune to it because you live in the city.

@hhusted what you say is true I don't deny that but I think I have a certain degree of comfort that I live in a building with good neighbors and good security. A family friend of ours lives in a remote area of Poughkeepsie in a huge sprawling home with neighbors who live some distance away. Well, that lady and her husband live alone and often when he is on his travels she locks herself in her bedroom and parks her BMW under her bedroom window for she says if someone breaks in she will dive out of her window into her car and escape. I wouldn't want to live like that ever. I rather live in a small cramped NYC apartment and have people around me.
