Ten Reasons for Coming to NYC
I read this article recently about NYC and it talked about the top ten reasons why non-New Yorkers would love to come here. I thought I would share it with everyone in this forum, just in case you are not aware of them.
1. Plenty of resources to help you make it here. If you are planning on coming to NYC, why not call 212-484-1200 or visit www.nycvisit.com to learn what resources are available.
2. NYC is the global leader in commerce and culture.
3. Based on several sources, NYC is rated number one in a number of areas. These areas include being the World's best city (Travel + Leisure), the world's hottest city (Conde Nast Traveler), the safest large city in America (FBi crime stats), the best sports city (Sporting News), and the greenest large city (Trust for Public Land).
4. Plenty of value. You can fly in and out of the city at competitive prices. You also have the option to go with the Convention Delegate Pass Program, where you can get a lot of value at participating establishments.
5. High Attendance. People are so intrigued by what is going on that if you hold an event, many people will come.
6. Choice of hotels. NYC has 70,000 hotel rooms, so you have a choice of location, price, and how you want the room to look.
7. Venues that are unique to NYC. From an Egyptian temple to a space-age model of the universe, NYC has a place for you to hold your events, where you can entertain your guests.
8. The best in transportation. You have so many options to get around the city. You have three major airports, 12,000 taxis, 3,700 buses, and 714 miles of subways. It doesn't matter much where you have to go, there is usually a way for you to get there.
9. 24-hour service. Do you need to use your laptop away from home. You can get wi-fi connections in may places.
10. A great vacation spot. There is so much to see. This is why tourists come here often.
The opinions expressed here are those of the individual and not those of StreetAdvisor.

11. The benefits of competition. New Yorker has so many talented artists, singers, writers, restaurantiers, chefs, etc., that (and this has its down-side) only the best make it big - meaning that your meal, your concert, your show, your newspaper, will all be of top-notch quality.

I second number 11.

Number 11 is a big part of why I moved to New York City, and why I was attracted to it from a young age.

I will say, though, that it has its down sides - the fact that being a decent person and hardworking sometimes isn't enough. My incipient socialist tendencies mean that I really ought to look down upon the machine that chews people up and spits them out - to mix metaphors - but I get starry-eyed at the thought of Making It Big. My favorite NYC moment of all time was at Jim Caruso's Cast Party at Birdland (an open mic showcase for Broadway types),, and this shy, awkward teenage girl got onstage, and said she'd JUST moved from Alabama that Tuesday, only to knock us all out with an untrained, but nonetheless sensational rendition of a Broadway song...and everyone was so supportive, clapping and laughing, etc

Competition is the driving force in NYC. This is why there are do many places to go for entertainment. There are many places for open-mike night, and many other kids of entertainment.

NYC is undoubtedly the greatest city in the world. No wonder it attracts the best talents in the world, its a well known fact in the music and fashion industries that you haven't really made it unless you have made it in New York City. Yes it has a highly competitive environment but it also somehow allows everybody a chance to 'make it'.
I do know of people who have come to NY from what you would call one horse towns in rural India and have made a life for themselves in New York through hard work, grit and determination. I however didn't move to NYC because its undeniable allure..I just married a New Yorker :) who is forever reminding me the fact that he was a New Yorker only added to his appeal sigh!

I love that story of the newbie belting out a song! I wonder what's going on with her now? Like, if she started training and stuff . . .

I like to think that she's Made It Big on Broadway. She's probably living with 30 roommates in a flea-infested Brooklyn walkup, eating ramen noodles and crying her eyes out over her latest fling - but I like to stay hopeful!

Brooklyn's too expensive now. More like New Jersey. . . sad. I won't think of her that way. No!

@ajadedidealist: You never know what happens with people in the city. One day she is singing a song, the next day she is just a normal person. Perhaps, she went back to Alabama. Hard to say.

To make it here you have to want something more than anyone else wants it. There are plenty of talented and good people who just can't cut it here, but I'm not crying for any of them. Not because I'me heard-hearted, but because its a given of living here that you want a certain intensity.

I used to dream about being on a farm as a kid. Or running away to the woods somewhere. There was a young adults book about a kid running away from his family and figuring out how to survive in the wilderness all by himself. That was going to be me. Which is hilarious, because I'm sure there are a lot of kids growing up on farms somewhere wishing they could run away to New York.
What I'm saying is, I guess you feel differently about New York if you've grown up here. I still think it's a great place, but it's also just the place where I grew up. That said, I did live other places after college, and look at me now: I'm back to living in New York after all. Can't get away somehow.

@Uraniumfish I feel the same way, and by now I can immediately feel out who is going to "make it" here and who isn't going to last too long. Seems like my neighborhood is full of (hipster) transients that promptly return to where ever they came from....

@everyone when I first moved here I seem to complain about NYC constantly and now when its time for me to leave I just don't want to go.. I love the fact that you can be totally anonymous here and people are not interested in your business unless you specifically want them to be .. thank god the husband invested in our place when he did for now we have a reason to come back to NYC every year.. yay!

Well, uptowngirl, I am not sure if NYC will miss you, but we will when you go. Hopefully, you will come back some time and we can see you or read your posts once again.

@uptowngirl I complain about the city constantly - NYC invites that kind of treatment. But whenever I travel anywhere else New York is all I ever talk about.... funny how that works out. At least you have something to look forward to every year when you come visit!

What a great idea! Such a pity I'm abroad at the moment...maybe uptowngirl and I might coincide at some point in NYC - we could have a forum meetup? Are we allowed to post our real (first) names on here? Otherwise I'll be thinking in screen names...

Now that is a great idea, uptowngirl. We can actually meet each other, and see what each looks like beyond the picture. I'm not photogenic so I take lousy pictures. I am sure we have a lot to tell one another that we can't say here. It will be a lot of fun.
