The City's Best Cupcake Offerings

The following is a list of bakeries in NYC that make good on the great American art of cupcake making. Please help me add to the list!

1. Magnolia Bakery
401 Bleecker Street
New York, NY 10014-2452

Duh.
2. Sugar Sweet Sunshine
126 Rivington Street
New York, NY 10002-2300

My personal favorite; residents recently broke down in tears when this place closed briefly for the holidays (http://ny.eater.com/archives/2010/01/les_goes_bonkers_when_sugar_sweet_sunshine_takes_vacation.php). One cupcake and you can understand why.
3. Babycakes
248 Broome St
New York, NY 10002

This tiny bakery is admittedly pricey - but that's because all of their goods are vegan. You can't get a better cupcake sans butter and eggs.
4. Amy's Bread
250 Bleecker Street
New York, NY 10014-4422

Duh's mom.
5. Make My Cake
2380 7th Avenue
New York, NY 10030-1703

Southern style bakery that features a sweet potato cheesecake and a melt-in-your-mouth original butter cream recipe. 'Nuff said.
6. Cupcake Cafe
545 9th Ave
New York, NY 10018

18 W 18th St
New York, NY 10011

7. E.A.T.
1064 Madison Avenue
(between E. 80th and 81st Streets)
New York, NY 10028
8. Baked by Melissa
529 Broadway
New York, NY 10012

7 E 14th St
New York, NY 10003

9. Veniero's Pastry Shop
342 E 11th St
New York, NY 10003

Oh, wow. I don't know which one is best. I love cupcakes, especially the ones with yellow or white frosting on top. Maybe I will try each one in order and see which one is best.

Ooh you have to add my favorite spot Buttercup cupcakes to the list -
Buttercup Bakery has two outlets in the city on the East side and the West side
East Side-
973 2nd Avenue
(Between 51st and 52nd Streets)
New York, NY 10022
West Side
141 West 72nd Street
(Between Amsterdam and Columbus)
New York, NY 10023
I believe buttercup was started by an ex-Magnolia partner. No matter I find their cupcakes much more moist than those produced by Magnolia but then I have friends who swear by Crumbs cupcakes.

@ Broadway BK, oh I think that last post sounded critical in a way I didn't necessarily intend. Merely wanted to point out, and in a joyful sense, that there are so many great baked goods within such a small radius.

If you're willing to spend, E.A.T. (EAT - static.elizabar.com 1064 Madison Avenue, New York - (212) 772-0022) has absolutely phenomenal cupcakes, along with desserts and quiches/sandwiches. There's some take-out available, but the best thing to do is eat in for afternoon tea. Then check out the EAT quirky toy/gift shop next door!

@Uraniumfish I'm actually just more familiar with the downtown area more than anywhere else, I suppose. So I wasn't sure if I maybe wasn't being fair to the rest of the island.

@BroadwayBK just read about a new cupcake loungebar! Its called the Red Velvet Lounge and it serves cocktails and booze infused mini cupcakes which are by Baked by Melissa.

Can't wait to check it out though apparently a friend of mine who is a desert aficionado who works for the annual NYC Chocolate Show says that the cup cake trend is dead and it soon to be replaced by doughnuts-http://www.doughnutplant.com/

@uptowngirl That is the best news I've gotten all day! Also can't believe I forgot about Baked by Melissa...

Ah, food trends. Well I'm all for doughnuts anyway.

Oh I can definitely vouch for the The Doughnut Plant's cake doughnuts. Discovered them by accident when I passed by and had th emunchies, and now, I try to find an excuse to pass by there every once in a while...

I just thought about another place that sells cupcakes. The place is Veniero's Pasticceria and Caffe'. They are located at 342 E.11th St. You can call 212-674-7070 for directions. You can also go to their website at

Seconding "hhusted's recommendation. It's a bit of an odd place - definitely a sense of faded grandeur - but the food's well worth it.

When you have a sweet tooth, sometimes you don't care where you get your cupcake, as long as it takes great. However, the cupcake may be good, but if the price is too high or service stinks, it is not worth it to me to go there.
