The sins of the fathers

Mark Madoff the son of disgraced financier and ponzi schemer, Bernie Madoff seems to have committed suicide in his NYC apartment while his two year old son was asleep in an adjoining room. Apparently Mark who worked at the trading desk at Madoff's firm along with his brother Andrew had reported his father to the authorities.

Wonder what made him take such a drastic step for apparently there was no warrant out for his arrest, the humiliation or the fact that he told on his father? whatever it was its an extremely sad incident..

Remember how Bernie Madoff expressed no regrets for his crimes, except that his family was suffering? http://gawker.com/5318491/bernie-madoffs-only-regret

Mark was a shadow of his father. He worked for his firm. He was hounded constantly by the press and the legal system over what his father did. In fact, some legal authorities actually believed Mark not only knew what his father did, but helped him. The bad publicity and constant hounding got the best of him, and he decided he had enough.

@BroadwayBK I am sure he now must be cursing himself for having been the cause of his son's suicide. As a parent you don't expect to outlive your offspring and in most cases I believe that the death of child can be pretty devastating

This story keeps getting sadder and sadder. Between this and the Edwards saga, American family stories can be so depressing!

I wonder if Bernie Madoff's regrets were sincere.

@uptowngirl No..he doesn't. Except that it hurt his wife, apparently. He didn't express any other regrets.

I feel sorry for his kids. The wife always knows what she is marrying and puts up with it, but the kids get born into the sins of their parents and it's sad that this man's entire life was overshadowed by his father.

There comes a time when adults become responsible for their own actions in spite of what they were raised around, though.

Agreed, BroadwayBK. But apparently it isn't easy carrying the Madoff name, so difficult in fact that the son no longer feels he can live with the pressure. Very sad indeed.

I lived in Germany and met a couple of people whose family names were the likes of Goebbels, etc. Many people in those families change their names because having war criminals in the family is an impossible burden, even a couple of generations down the line.

From what I understand little Madoff was working with big Madoff?

@BroadwayBK Both the Madoff offspring worked with the father,in fact if I am not mistaken they were the ones who reported him and they claimed that they had no idea what he was up to.

@Everyone I recently saw a documentary on Madoff behind bars apparently the prison that he is in is like a old people's home where he has privileges like TV time. He is apparently obsessed with his own news coverage and watches news features that mention him religiously. He sound like one narcissistic oaf.

@uptowngirl Wow! I can't think of anything sadder than Madoff rotting away in front of a TV, obsessed that much with himself till the very end.

Madoff always thought of himself as the king of the jungle. Just because he was making millions of dollars, he thought he was untouchable. Well, look at him now. And guess what, the feds were after Mark because they suspected he was in on the scheme. They claim they had proof. When Mark found this out, he did not want to end up behind bars like his father, so he killed himself.
