Transferring a balance on a expired Metro Card

I have a question for all of you. I just discovered that I have a half used pay per ride Metro Card which is due to expire later this month. Since I am only coming in next month could I transfer the balance on to a new card? how and where can I do this? I think there is $20-30 on the card and I could use it rather than allow to be wasted.

Hmm. You might have to just mail it to a friend and have them use it, then get them to buy you an equivalent card.

The MTA has information about transferring the balance of cards. You may want to go to MTA's website to read about it. I haven't been there in a while, so am not sure if it is still there.

If your Pay-Per-Ride MetroCard expires, you have two years from the expiration date to transfer any remaining money to a new card. Within the first year after expiration, bring your expired card to any subway station and ask the agent to make the transfer. After that time, the expired MetroCard must be sent to MetroCard customer claims. Ask the station agent for a postage-paid Business Reply Envelope. (found on the MTA website)

Marie Jensen -- That's what I did. I had 3 expired cards and I filled out the form, sent it in, and waited about a month. They were very honest and gave me all new MetroCards with whatever amount was left on the expired cards.
