Is Marina in San Francisco walkable? Can I walk to everything or do I need a car?

No car required. The entire Marina is very walkable with good bus/Muni options. We're a flat neighborhood with easy access to everything. For a specfic address checkout the "walkscore" at Walkscore.com. The most popular street for shops and restaurants is Chestnut St. We're surrounded by parks, have great water and beach access and more.

No, you don't need a car in the Marina; there's lots of public transportation (no streetcars or BART though) and tons of taxis everywhere. You can take the 30 Stockton or the 45 Union straight to Union Square. The Marina is also relatively flat so you can easily bike around, which is a great option for exploring beautiful Crissy Field and the Presidio right next door. There are lots of great shopping and dining options easily within walking distance on Chestnut, Union and Lombard, as well as a little further up Fillmore in Pacific Heights. If you want to have a car, you can park it around the Marina Green or find residential street parking, although it can be difficult, especially since a lot of the buildings in the Marina are apartments.

I would never want a car in the Marina as it would equate to many parking tickets. If you do have one, I'd suggest a Smart car, a Mini or a Fiat as they are super tiny. Many parking spaces are really small.

Yes, it's fantastically walkable! As a bonus, it's actually one of the flatter areas in the city. People without cars actually have it easier, as parking in the Marina can be challenging. I have friends who live and work car-less here, and for trips further afield on weekends they just use ZipCar.

The Marina District in San Francisco is about as walkable as it gets. You can walk to everything. The streets are some of the most beautiful in all of San Francisco with nice healthy trees and well kept home fronts (the architecture here is really attractive). You have restuarants and grocery stores (they have their own Safeway) all with the Marina so they are less than a mile away no matter where you live.
Several Muni (bus) lines serve the Marina, so you don't need a car to even get to work. You really don't need a car for the area at all. Though if you have one, most of the homes have garages--which is another convenience of the area.
