Are e many local businesses in Milan? What kinds?

Not really. Milan is right on an important highway, the Taconic State Parkway, but there still are not many establishments around town. The population is pretty low (2,300 or thereabouts) so there isn't a ton of opportunity.

You might see some bed and breakfasts, a restaurant here and there, maybe some farms, and an establishment for horseback riding. What you're probably not going to find includes supermarkets, retail shopping, or other things of that nature.
