How safe is the area around 3435 Cesar Chavez St?

I will be staying at a loft here with my boyfriend. Are there any streets to avoid?

Okay so you are in San Francisco so you should be aware that the crime rate is higher than the national average and that you should behave accordingly. In addition, you are the southern end of The Mission District which is one of the more dangerous areas in San Francisco (in terms of murders they actually get more than virtually any other neighborhood except for Hunter’s Point, which is notorious for its gangs) but the Mission is very big so you are still relatively unlikely to run into severe trouble.

This will give you a sense of how things are. If you go to the website Crimespotting.com (the SF Police Department approved crime tracking site), you can search that address and see what you get. I did that with the address you listed. In the last week, within half a mile of that address there have 6 assaults and 2 burglaries (I sorted out minor offences since I figured you were not so concerned with drugs and DUI’s). Since the beginning of the year, btw, there have been 46 assaults/burglaries. 13 assaults just 2 blocks from there.

Okay, so you’re not in Kansas, anymore Dorothy, but on the other hand, my experience has been that so long as you use common sense you can usually avoid trouble. So don’t go for Romantic walks after dark. Drive to locations at nighttime. Pay attention to your surroundings at all times, and you should be okay.

The Mission is actually a great place for clothes shopping and hanging with hipsters etc. Elbow Room is great bar in which to hang-out or get in some dancing and there are ton of fun things to do. Just use common sense and you can avoid trouble. (If you are planning on living there long term, of course, your chances of having something bad happen go up considerably. I’ve had close calls and friend have had break-ins etc.)

Naturally, being in a city is more dangerous than being in the middle of nowhere - it's the downside to population density. If you use common sense, you can get around just fine, though. Most of the violent crime is gang-related. That said, I would avoid walking around that particular area very late at night. I have a friend who lives right there and they've never had any issues, so just be smart about it. If you are wanting to check out the Mission - you can quite easily walk to good stuff -- just head up Valencia (north) and in about 4 blocks, you'll start to see cool shops, bars and restaurants. You can also head South on Mission Street -- it's a bit more gritty, but there are some bars and restaurants that-a-way, too. If you find yourself out late at a night - I'd recommend taking a cab home. Hope this helps -- enjoy your stay in San Francisco!
