Should any parts of Near South Side in Chicago be avoided more than others?

Yeah, overall the Near South Side is pretty safe. It's so close to the heart of the city that there's quite a bit of police presence to keep any crime to a minimum. I don't think you need to worry about any particular part.

Most areas of Near South Side are safe. The only area that has a few more thefts and misdemeanors is the south western corner of the neighborhood.
