Best/safest places to stay while visiting NYC?

Some friends and I are planning a trip to NYC in the summer and we're looking into renting for a week but not sure what areas are safest and easiest to get around ? We plan on doing all the "touristy" things and maybe check out the nightlife. Suggestions welcome!! Thanks!
