Best Indian food in NYC?

Any suggestions for an Indian-food-lover? I live part-time in England, and despite the reputation, Indian food there is TERRIBLE compared to that of New York City! Coming home, a saag paneer or palak ghost is one of the first items on my agenda. I particularly enjoy Banjara, on 6th St. and 1st Avenue, for a romantic atmosphere and deliciously complex flavours, and Tamarind, on 93rd and 3rd, for a more casual "lunch" atmosphere that nevertheless is enormously enjoyable. They also have fantastic fig ice cream!

Oh, now I'm making myself hungry...

Yeah, I'm interested in the answer to this one too. Surely there's better options than that row of Indian restaurants on 8th street?

@ajadedidealist really? dont tell me you have been frequenting the balti joints in England that masquerade as Indian restaurants- have you tried the Cinnamon Club, Rasoi and Zaika in London? they areall pretty good.

As an Indian, my all time favorites in NYC are 'Amma' which is a quiet little spot on 51st between 1st and 2nd avenue and of course Tamarind which you mentioned. I also like the buffets at Yuva which is on 58th and 3rd avenue but for more casual fare I tend to head down to curry lane on 28th street and Lexington avenue for kebabs and biryani at Handi and dosas and idlis at Sarvana Bhavan and when I crave a 'chaat' I head out to Maharaja in Jackson Heights , Queens,
