Best Quaint Indian Restaurant? Mine closed down! :-(
I used to love a small Indian restaurant on 9th and 54th but the last time I looked, they were gone! Only
a nail salon in its place. Anyone know of a place in the area that is small, cheap with GREAT food!
This one was really hard to beat -- food was SOOOO fresh. Unbelievable.
This was the 2nd restaurant I lost in Indian food. Last one was Poona on 72nd St!

The user ajadeidealist just started a forum thread on this topic, and it already has a few suggestions. Look up "indian" in the search option.

Hiya Mayeg! I'm just repeating some stuff from the other thread. Basically, my top two recommendations are the amazing/exotic Banjara in the East Village, which is romantic (candlelight, tapestries, etc), and the much more homey Tamarind on the Upper East Side (Yorkville). Of the two, Tamarind is probably a bit more of what you're looking for. One warning - it's often quite deserted at lunchtime, which is a pity, as it's excellent! The fig ice cream is phenomenal. My mother lived in India for a good portion of her life and she swears by these two places.

If anyone wishes to there are three Indian restaurants side-by-side on 1st Ave somewhere between 6th and 10th St. You can't miss it because they have a lot of lights hanging up inside.

It's called Indian row on 8th Street, and I'm personally not thrilled by them. I'd go with the others' suggestions, hhusted. I'm willing to believe anyone who's acquainted with the real stuff, and it seems a couple of the posters on this thread and the other know their Indian pretty well...

The only problem with the restaurants on 8th St is that they do not take credit cards. But when my friend and I ate at two of them, the food was superb. I especially loved the desert.

In New York, Indian Chinese Food is very famous among the Indian community. There are many famous Indian Chinese Restaurant such as Chinese Mirch, Sagar Chinese etc.
Comparing all these restaurant Sagar Indian Chinese Restaurant is best to me. They have authentic Indian Chinese test, clean and family environment, friendly stuff, very reasonable price.
I never miss to have at least once on my weekend. They do catering. I order for their catering services when ever any big or small program in my family.

@Uraniumfish, Banjara is actually on that Indian restaurant row (6th St between 1st and 2nd) and it's miles better than the competition! (It's the one on the corner). I was there just last week (Thursday) and I can vouch that it's got the same great quality - and the prices are still very reasonable!

@Rajesh084972 Do these Indian Chinese Restaurants have dishes like Manchurian and American Chop Suey? seem to remember those from my childhood outings with my grandparents to the local Chinese joints in Mumbai.

I'm very picky about what I eat, but there is one thing I can say for sure, the Indian restaurants I went to on Indian Row had such tasty food dishes. And the service was totally awesome. I went back there four times within a three month period.

@hhusted I am truly surprised at your reaction for I know many Americans including my next door neighbor in NYC who abhor Indian food because they think it's 'smelly' due to the many spices used..

@Uptowngirl: This may not be Indians. My girlfriend told me they were more Pakistan people, or in that area of the world. So perhaps they prepare their food differently from Indian people.
