Hair Salons in NYC

For the women on the board more specifically, how much do you pay for a cut and/or color, and was it worth it?

I go to Irene L Salon - (212) 828-8993

1392 Madison Avenue
New York, NY 10029 - and pay $150 for a color/highlights and a bit less a cut and blow dry and it's absolutely GORGEOUS and worth the money, as long as I only go a couple times of year.

I used to go to Licari -
693 5th Avenue
New York, NY 10022-3160, United States
(212) 758-2090 -

but the prices were absolutely outrageous ($450+!) and they honestly didn't do that good a job...

I was referred to Stacy Pitt at Styles on B by a girl whose hair I loved on the street. It's just her in a renovated apartment in the East Village. I pay 130 for cut, color and tip! I paid 300 with my previous lady for just highlights (with a discount) and Stacy does a better job! I always joke that I have Victoria's Secret / Beach sex hair because of Stacy. She's a pretty awesome person too. The only downside of her is that because it's just her, she's really booked up.

@JenMac that's a great deal. I am kind off mulling with the idea of changing my hairstyle, its currently long in layers which I just pull back and pin. Let's see if I finally do have the courage to do so would hate to sacrifice the length though.

I like the new, young colorist at Space in SoHo. I had her a few times while she was still officially a trianee, and now I think she has graduated on to being officially on staff. Anyway, I love how precise and attentive she was to the slightest nuance.

I haven't gotten a color in years, but it seems like I usually pay about $80 for a cut. I've been going to KE Haas Hair Salon in the LES (on Clinton), and they always do a really great job. It's a tiny place, but it's one of those where salons they offer you wine, which is kind of a prerequisite for me.

The last time I got a cut I went to Mousey Brown Hair Salon in Williamsburg. They did a good job. But, a little disclaimer: I have long hair and don't really need a stylist to introduce a lot of texture to my hair like you would for an actual short style. I just have some simple layers really. Anyway, I paid $55 for a cut and blow dry.

@BroadwayBk I was so fed up with my hair which sounds quite similair to yours that I went along with my husband on Saturday evening to the salon that he frequents-Salon Moscow(Unisex) on First Avenue between 80th and 81st Street.. its run by a raucous bunch of gay guys who are truly fun and boisterous. Anyway to cut a long story short , the stylist suggested that my hair was very healthy and needed just a trim and some cleaning up -which he did pretty well.. I paid a similar amount as you did and walked out a whole lot happier...

@NeverSleeps I have actually been there with my husband before and have always seen a ton of women getting their hair cut and colored so I figured it was pretty safe..and I was so fed up with my hair as I seemed to be losing a ton of it and thought that I was going bald. The stylist did a great job of reassuring me that I was in no immediate danger of going bald ..btw I got the name of the place wrong its the Hair n Now Salon not Salon Moscow which is located a few doors down the street...

@uptowngirl Were you just losing the normal amount of hair then? I lose a lot of hair - the last guy I dated was always telling me that it was all over his apartment, and when one of my roommates moved to LA she said she kept finding my hairs in her clothes. I think losing hair is just more evident when you have really lengthy ones.

I never want to get my hair cut just anywhere, but I feel like most people can do a reasonably good job with it.

@BrodwayBK I seem to lose a ton of hair in NYC especially during the winter. I have long, dark hair and light floors in my apartment so its very noticeable and tends to drive me batty! I am always picking it up off the floor I guess it wouldn't be so bad if I my hair was a lighter hue...

@uptowngirl, BroadwayBK How come hair is so sexy when it's attached to the body and so gross the minute that it's no longer attached? I've had the hair problem too, all my life. Word, @uptowngirl. I've got really long/frizzy/unmanageable reddish hair, and it gets on EVERYTHING. I kiss my boyfriend and somehow he manages to end up with a mouth full of hair. And I live in a house with three guys who are not pleased with me clogging up the shower drain.

@ajadedidealist quick invest in a hair catcher .. you can buy them at Bed, Bath and Beyond. I used to have the same problem but the hair catcher has solved the clogging of the drain issue. Another piece of advice I don't know about you but I tend to chuck all my errant strands of hair that I pick up from the floor into the toilet and flush them away. My ma in law saw me do it in NYC and said that I am never to do it in her home in London for apparently it clogs the drains so if you do that as well dont or you will be in big trouble.. aha the trials and tribulations of city living.

Americans shower too much, but I have to admit I am guilty of the teeth whitening thing. @Everybody It's true Americans are freakish about personal hygiene, as compared to Europeans and the rest of the world. They take way more showers, and care way more about straight, white teeth, and waxing, and moisturizing than the rest of the world. My French friends always talk about how Americans are Puritannical about their bodies, to the point where they can't deal with natural things like body odor and hairy legs...

@uptowngirl I see the occasional girl with hairy legs and I can't help but feel weird about it. I guess even a higher education and a feminist perspective can't rid us all of the social norms we hold so dear. As a pale girl with dark hair, the battle against hair is never over. But I won't give in!

@DBlack My experience with the French led me to believe that they actually wax more than we do. I think Americans are more into shaving. With waxing, you have to actually let the hair grow back before you can wax again...

I once had a doctor tell me that it was really unnecessary to scrub yourself with soap every day - he said that you should really only wash the "crevices" of your body on a daily basis, and the rest doesn't need so much maintenance. So, yes, Americans tend to over do it with the showering, according to one doctor at least.

@Everyone but if you have to live here then you have to conform to the norms or you feel like a freak . I used to have a front tooth which was chipped years ago in a cricket game injury. Before I came to the US I never used to bother about it for I even had a gap between my front teeth which I used to consider to be my lucky charm( it was a small gap) but once I moved here I became very conscious of my imperfections as everybody around me was getting their teeth straightened ,polished etc so I went back to my dentist in India and had the gap fixed and the chip covered with a veneer. the total cost of the treatment was $600 here it would have been an astronomical sum.

uptowngirl 2yrs+
@BroadwayBK I didn't factor in airfare because I go home once a year anyway to see my folks and did the treatment on one of my trips. Three of my friends back home are dentists and they all three studied here in the US before they went back home to practice so I have no problem trusting them with my teeth though I am aware most Americans are squeamish about traveling overseas for medical procedures. Medical tourism to Asian countries may slowly catch on as health care costs continue to spiral upwards in the US.

I used to wash my hair everyday when I used to swim everyday back home but then a stylist told me it was not good for my hair because of its length. So now I use a shampoo which I buy in London, 'L'oreal's Vive Pro light for Medium to Long Hair which tends to get greasy' and it works for me.
