Philosophy Salons in NYC

I know that several Parisian cafes (but of course) sponsor philosophical "salons" every now and then. I thought I'd see if NYC had anything similar. One meetup is here - http://www.philosophynow.org/events?country=6 - but it's not sponsored by a cafe. Anyone know if this is done anywhere in the City?

I'm part of an informal group of scientists and artists who meet once a week. Some of us invite others we know, so the circle waxes and wanes. But we're not official in any way and don't advertise ourselves. @ajadeidealist Why not start your own?

I think NYU has some formal discussions that are open to the public. But wouldn't this kind of thing just be found by hanging around the philosophy department of any of the universities? Surely all those bright and eager students are organizing philosophy talks, no?

That sounds like a good starting place. I'll get in touch with my friend studying Phil at Columbia - I see Hungarian Pastry Shop Salons in order...

I keep seeing ads in the subway for the New York School of Philosophy. It's supposed to change your life to get together and have philosophical discussions. For whatever that's worth.

I don't trust any school that has to advertise. Does Columbia put up signs in the subway? I think my distrust stems from all the mail I get from strange educational programs telling me it's time to consider a new career.
