Sex and the City by numbers
It's been my experience that even women with extreme reservations towards the show Sex and the City (like, say, feeling cheated that so many people say how this show represents "all that women think and feel about sex") can't help but watch it once in a while.
Anyway, came across this via New York mag online, which sort of pokes fun of a movie that is going to be a huge hit regardless of what anyone has to say about it.

Well I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels underrepresented by SATC. What worries me is coming across guys once in a while who seem to expect women to be this way? And then I do have to wonder what is wrong with this world.

@Uraniumfish: Media has a way of driving you crazy with propaganda. They like to stir the part with sensationalism. This is why i don't watch TV much anymore. I watch movies more than anything, and I watch movies not just for entertainment reasons, but to learn the structure, since I am in a screenwriting workshop.

I've watched it, but to be honest I don't *GET* it. I find the women pathetic, for the most part - why can't they just have confidence and be themselves? Maybe they're realistic; I don't know .

@Uraniumfish I think because it was the first show that only dealt with how women felt about sex made a lot of people think this is how all women think about it. But the characters on the show in no way resemble actual humans. Maybe Carrie is the most developed character, but the rest of them are just representative of stereotypes - it's pretty annoying that women are supposed to be represented by a nympho, an uptight woman who only dreams of marriage, and a redheaded feminist...all of whom don't ever come close to having human dimensions. I once had a friend tell me that he was happy to watch the show to see how women view sex and relationships and I couldn't understand why he just didn't ask an actual woman. And believe it or not, we're all different.
@ajadedidealist I often feel the same way - these women are supposed to be in their thirties but they act so juvenile when it comes to dating. I can see why they stay single.

@hhusted I don't think the show is propaganda - it's just entertainment. And the show is funny sometimes. I just wish the script was written better...

I'm gonna have to disagree on this one. I do concur that the women are stereotypes. I think one of the writers had said that all of them put together are supposed to equal one full person. But, the stereotypes are there to exaggerate themes. Having said that, I know a lot of women around thirty who are single and treat / talk about dating in the same manner. And, there were a lot of episodes that hit on feelings and notions that I have experienced myself, so it was kind of groundbreaking in that it gave women that voice. . . made them feel like everyone experiences these things and feels that way at some point. The episode Catch 38 -- the one where Carrie has to confront if she really does want to have a baby or have a relationship with a man who won't -- that's something a lot of women I know grapple with.

@JenMac I do think the show broke new ground - I just wish people didn't see it as some definitive guide to women on the subject of sex.

I suppose we take much of it for granted nowadays, @JenMac, that we forget how groundbreaking the show really was!

I'm glad that the writers acknowledge the limitations of those characters. And it's definitely good to have a woman's point of view on television... but it's also good to keep in mind that not all women are represented by one show.

Carrie is the only one who even comes close to resembling an actual human woman, so wouldn't most women relate to her the most? Then again sorority girls at my college were always aspiring to be Charlotte...because what else is there to do other than get married?

@Everyone I used to watch SATC slavishly when I didn't live in NYC more than stereotyping women it conveyed the bright lights, big city allure that NYC has for folks who dont live there. Only once you begin to live in NYC , you understand its not really that easy to make it here and NY life really isnt about going out to the hottest eateries, shopping for expensive shoes and having sexual trysts with good looking strangers .. but even then the show and the movie helped keep the NYC illusion alive and were definitely entertaining. Moreover I actually feel that many women in their thirties/early forties actually face similar challenges that these women faced on the show for instance Charlotte's inability to conceive and her subsequent adoption of a baby from overseas, Samantha's breast cancer scare etc these issues are not entirely uncommon for women in their late 30's / early 40's in any big city. That's why perhaps many women that I know felt they could 'relate' to these four...

But it was that - an illusion! I happen to like the real, non-Manolo-Blahniked city much better than its pale imitation

@uptowngirl Seriously. They never show those women actually working... it's all about play and spending money. And where do they meet so many eligible bachelors?
@everyone Does anyone else find Manolo Blahniks not that hot? I've not met many pairs that I would be caught dead wearing. They are so old lady-ish.

@BroadwayBK I guess they meet the guys online! I've known a couple of people who were real online swingers and it seemed they had dates 3 to 4 times a week. Seriously not my scene, but it's somebody's scene since there are a lot of people doing this.
I agree about Blahniks. I just don't do...bows on shoes. Yuck.
