Safety Reassurance in Northside

I've recently signed a lease on Chase Ave about 1.5 blocks from the main strip. I was really excited because the house has been recently renovated and is just awesome. My girlfriend has been planning to move up with me, and was excited about it too, but she did get nervous about her safety once seeing the edges of the neighborhood (I'll be working nights and she is concerned about being alone in the house and walking the dogs in the evenings). Can anyone give me some good advice and hopefully sources to help ease her mind about moving here?
