Looking for the best neighborhood in San Diego that is close to the beach, quiet and safe?

i just moved from the midwest and so far i like the city. i am looking for the best neighborhood for me. i absolutely love love the beach. not really big on nightlife but occasional mingle. i like peace and quite in a friendly / secure enviroment that's great for a young single professional. would appreciate some pointers
