In my experience, the students tend to choose the school with the schedule type they prefer and not the one geographically closest, since the entire PV Peninsula is relatively small. Palos Verdes (PV) High works on a block schedule, with A days having periods 1,2,and 3 and B days having periods 4,5,and 6, while Peninsula HS (Pen) works on a more traditional schedule with all periods on all 5 days. The block schedule tends to work better for student athletes, and as a result PV high is noted for its equestrian team (winner of So Cal league championship 6 years in a row), its golf, water polo and lacrosse teams, among others. Peninsula is famed for its drama department and its rigorous academics. However, both schools have highly competitive teams in most sports, and both have extremely high scores in the US News and World Reports rankings of US High Schools.
Although I do think that PV Estates kids tend to go to PV High and Silver Spur and East side RPV kids tend to go to Pen, I believe that a larger portion of the kids choose based on block vs traditional schedule.
My kids both went to PV high, but have many friends from Pen as well. I've helped several families relocate to the PV area and can help you make the transition smoothly. Let me know if I can help you too!
