"Most beautiful drive ever!"
Sure, PCH can be blocked and it can be dangerous. But, it is so gorgeous, I'll take the risk. PCH, or Interstate 1, rolls up the entire state right along the water. As far as PCH goes in Los Angeles, the road is flush with the water at some points and up in canyon areas as you travel toward Ventura County. Either way, you see the ocean for almost the entire drive. The drive can be quite dangerous and crashes happen all the time. The combination of a lot of traffic at high speeds on a windy road is bad enough. But, then you add in the fact that there is a glare at sunset and people often don't pay attention because they're staring at the water, and you have a recipe for some serious disaster. But, as long as you're careful, this drive is worth it.
My favorite part of PCH is in Malibu. The highway is a little above the ocean and the breeze is always a little bit stronger than in Santa Monica. Some great restaurants are right on the water on PCH. Dukes is a fun Hawaiin place where the view isn't spectacular but the drinks are fun and beachy and the view is great. Moonshadows is one of my favorite places for a raucous Sunday brunch.
Chart House has a great view and pretty good food. But, my all time favorite is Paradise Cove. It's a really long drive (past Pepperdine). But, the drive up is beautiful. You go up with an endless view of the ocean and past the cove where about 100 surfers can be seen on any given day sitting on their boards waiting for a swell.
Man! I love PCH. Even if it takes a little bit longer to get somewhere by driving it; you wont even notice.

"The 1 Highway"
What is a better way to spend you weekend afternoon than drive on the coastline? Isn't it highly recommended that when you visit LA, to drive on the coastline anytime of the day, specially when the sun starts to set and you see how beautiful (romantic) it is to see such beauty there is? I have to admit, if you come back from up trip up north, I would choose the coastal path. It is breath taking and very highly calming and it can be a good therapy.
