Is 22 nd street near division ave a safe neighborhood?

We are a family of 5. We plan to rent a place on 22 no street near division ave. We are a lesbian blended family. Will this be a problem? We also want to walk the dog. Is it safe to do so? I know the area from word of mouth. Is it gotten any better? I just want a cheap place to move and feel safe living there . We keep to ourselves and would walk the dog or sit out side to smoke or take the dog out to do her business. What does anyone say?? Please help us.
