"The cantaloupe capital of Colorado"
Rocky Ford is a small agricultural community an hour east of Pueblo. This town of just under 4,000 is famous in Colorado for it's yearly supply of cantaloupe and watermelons to the state and across the nation. In the late summer months during harvest time you can find numerous road side stands selling these large melons for a good price.
The town is made up of a mostly Hispanic population (59%) followed by white (38%). The remaining population is made up of a mixture of races, American Indian, or black. The median household income in Rocky Ford is $26,800 while the median home price is $69,200.
The great thing about Rocky Ford is the people. Whether you come here just for the produce or for a longer visit, the people are all so friendly and nice. During growing season it's a sea of green and neat to look at.
There isn't a hospital in Rocky Ford but just eight miles away in La Junta is the Arkansas Valley Regional Medical Center. Also in La Junta are numerous stores and food establishments.
Rocky Ford has it's own schools, but they are unfortunately not rated very well. They traditionally score well below average on state testing standards.
