San Diego..best area for single professional...safe, quiet..convenient to SD and LaJolla?

Want convenient rental commuting to both hospital and SD University. Would prefer something other than cookie-cutter apartment complex...have lived in the Midwest and Boston area...professional, 30's, single..want a comfortable, friendly, quiet atmosphere with no drama...but close enough to nightlife and amenities for an occasional night out. Thank you. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
