Where is a good place to live in Southern CA (south of LA to SD)?

My girlfriend is 25 and I'm 30, we're looking for something close to the beach, and has good public transportation or a walkable area. Looking to spend around $1500/mo in rent. Have been looking into San Diego, but am open anywhere in southern California as long as it is not in LA.
